{"id":111,"date":"2018-02-18T18:04:43","date_gmt":"2018-02-19T02:04:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vzome.com\/blog\/?p=111"},"modified":"2018-02-18T18:29:07","modified_gmt":"2018-02-19T02:29:07","slug":"running-vzome-on-linux","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vzome.com\/blog\/2018\/02\/running-vzome-on-linux\/","title":{"rendered":"Running vZome on Linux"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As of vZome 6.0 build 22, we will now be shipping a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vzome.com\/download\/6.0\/latest\/linux\/vZome-Linux-6.0.zip\">Linux version of vZome<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is a simpler distribution than either the Mac or Windows variant, since it does not include its own Java Runtime Environment.  It is simply a ZIP file.  Unzip it and you will find <strong>bin<\/strong> and <strong>lib<\/strong> folders.  In the <strong>bin<\/strong> folder, you will find the launch script, named &#8220;vZome-6.0&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>If you have not installed Java on your Linux machine, you will see something like this when you run the script:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vzome.com\/blog\/2018\/02\/running-vzome-on-linux\/linux-no-java\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-116\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"772\" height=\"98\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vzome.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/linux-no-java.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-116\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vzome.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/linux-no-java.png 772w, https:\/\/www.vzome.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/linux-no-java-300x38.png 300w, https:\/\/www.vzome.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/linux-no-java-768x97.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 772px) 100vw, 772px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oracle.com\/technetwork\/java\/javase\/downloads\/jre8-downloads-2133155.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">download the JRE from Oracle<\/a>.  You&#8217;ll end up with a file like &#8220;jre-8u162-linux-x64.tar.gz&#8221;.  Assuming the file was saved to your Downloads folder, you can unpack it as follows:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>cd ~\/Downloads<br \/>\ntar xzvf jre-8u162-linux-x64.tar.gz<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This will leave you with a folder named ~\/Downloads\/jre1.8.0_162.  To enable the vZome launch script, all you have to do is set the JAVA_HOME environment variable appropriately, before running the script:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>export JAVA_HOME=~\/Downloads\/jre1.8.0_162<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We won&#8217;t be providing many guarantees about this distribution, since we don&#8217;t have the time to do a lot of testing on Linux.  I have a virtual machine running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, and I did some basic sanity testing of vZome 6.0 build 22.  Most features seem to work fine, but there is a nasty bug associated with article mode.  Since the first thing you see will be the &#8220;quick-start&#8221; article, this bug may cause a crash right away.  Launch vZome again, and you&#8217;ll end up with a new document; if you stay out of article mode thereafter, you should be OK.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As of vZome 6.0 build 22, we will now be shipping a Linux version of vZome.
